Kasaï Masaï at The National Centre for Early Music
Saturday 4 October 2008
Kasaï Masaï bring the traditional sounds of the nomadic tribes of the Congolese rainforest to England, picking up a contemporary twist on the way.
Playing ancestral music handed down over the generations, their sound is rooted in the healing power of percussion and chanting combined with the majestic Congolese folk guitar and jazz saxophone. The five piece band consists of d'jembe, guitar, saxophone, bass and drum. Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, the lyrics reflect the cultural diversity of a region where more than 400 languages are spoken.
"Kasaï Masaï successfully marry a respect for vintage grooves with an overwhelming urge to move the dance floor. This is the sound of the old and the new, of the countryside and the city, from deep in the heart of Africa"
